Empirically speaking...
I came to love math empirically. I started studying and teaching almost at the same time. I was one of the people that not only I didn't think I am capable of understandng math, but had no previous background or personal interest.
So, I try to emphasize this to my students, things can change; it's up to us to have the right mindset and motivation to make from something "ugly" something rather "beautiful".
My method
I usually follow the Socratic method. I believe that tutoring is not a monologue, but a dialogue. I let my students talk for the most part and not the other way round; initiative is the key to believe in your abilities.
I am most comfortable with whiteboards either in my place or portable that I can carry. Math is also a visual art!
I am persistent, enthusiastic and I live for math (what else could be ideal...?)
I became a tutor for two reasons:
1. there is no better way to learn than to teach
2. nothing gives me more joy than to allow me to be their companion and helper to their difficult (math) issues
- I teach people in Groups
- I can provide my own notes for the course
